It’s a very interesting observation using the XP1 against the XE1. I’m not saying one is better than the other, just different working with them. The XP1 by default for me draws me to the OVF. I’m not talking about settings, I’m talking about working with the camera. The XE1 for me, draws me to the screen. Yeah, yeah, they both have screens and they both have EVFs. It’s a fact that I prefer the screen on any camera because of the way it presents the image to me. I haven’t likes any viewfinder since the Leica M cameras.
This is the OVF with the 27mm (40mm). I’m close and the accuracy is very close to what I’m seeing even tho’ I’m close. C’mon man, we all know the EVF is closer…yeah but the OVF allows me to use both eyes open. The thing that turns me on is that I can use both eyes. Well, there has to be adjustments made due to Focal Length. So, like the M, we can see the AF patch and frame lines with the right eye and by either squinting and or opening and closing the left eye, see the scene without the frame lines etc.
I’m not posting the most amazing images but I am posting different ways I see and work with the XP1 and now the 27mm. Tomorrow I will try the combination of the 18mm and the 27mm. That’s the Ricoh dream.
I am not trying to do a review of these cameras. I feel that in order to get a firm grip on the camera and my photography, it’s only right to do so after using them for a good period of time and experience. Yeah, you can go to the hot blogs and read all about any camera and get all excited and then, after a week, the blogger is selling something else. I’m not writing about getting yours or my GAS in high gear. I’m writing about making photos with a well tested camera that I still use after 15 new models came and went.
Afternoon Don. Looks like Philly is treating you well this weekend!
Thanks Duane. I was at the VA for a spell but things got to be ok after a spell.
Hope your move is going good.
I’m right behind you Don.
“I’m writing about making photos with a well tested camera that I still use after 15 new models came and went.” I like that sentence. It has something to do with my year long Df project. I’m looking forward to working at 40mm as I have ordered the Voigtlander 40mm for the Nikon.
Dan, very dangerous to use the 40mm 1.4 Nokton. Legend has it that many a good shooters have fallen prey to the 40mm from the 35mm or even the 50mm.
They put the 40mm on a Leica, Nikon, Sony maybe FF camera and they are never heard from again. They just are out there in the world making photos.
I found a way to circumvent the issue. See, I’m shooting a 27mm and the camera thinks it’s a 40mm. I like it a lot but the camera won’t let me get lost in 40mm FF land.
This is serious, as you can tell. It’s a Ricoh users dream but never comes true.
I’ll keep an eye out for ya Dan, good luck. That lens is a killer.
UPS says it is arriving tomorrow, so if you don’t hear from me in a while . . . .
But this one is the f2 Ultron version. Maybe it is safer.
Dan, good luck and find your way with the new camera and lens. There’s something about the 40mm that is really magical. I had my 35mm on the XP1 ready for tomorrow and then read your last post. I’ll tell ya. The 27mm looks great on the XP1. Can’t wait to see what you see with this setup…..don
Don, I just got my XP1 a couple weeks ago and while it is a fantastic
camera it’s one hell of a brick to be carried all day long 365 days a year so for shooting in the streets I still
prefer my trusty old X10. It just disappears in my large hands (or my
jacket), either people don’t notice it or they don’t give a damn. A
slightly larger sensor (X30 ?) wouldn’t be bad, but my copy focuses
reliably and really, really fast and I couldn’t wish for a better lens.
From ISO200 upwards and shot RAW (up to 3k2 in a bind) I get all the
wonderful noise/grain I could ask for, no need to add anything
artificial; which for me is an absolute no-go – gotta stick with my darkroom ethics. I get really nice prints from it and can’t help it but I just
love that baby – I’ll keep the XP1 for some other stuff I’m working
on.
I’m glad you enjoy yours !
Kay, You will not get a negative response from me on the X10. I had one and then moved to the X20. Both are amazing cameras for real shooters. Of course I am also stupid as I never take my own advice and sold both. But, as you said….X30……already on my radar.
Thanks Kay….don
“I’m not writing about getting yours or my GAS in high gear. I’m writing about making photos with a well tested camera that I still use after 15 new models came and went.” …poignant words Don! My Fuji X100 and I are having our one year anniversary this year. It’s still a better camera than I am photographer. As pretty as the new models are…the X100 and I are in it for the long haul.
Oh yeah. I gotta say…the prints I had made from the X100 were outstanding. I had to get rid of mine for reasons of stupidity but I sure do miss it. It’s a fine friend in hand.
